CRIMINAL RECORD SERVICES

The Independent Criminal Records Department of the Central Services of the Ministry of Justice and the Criminal Records Services of the Public Prosecutors Office of the Courts of First Instance of Greece issue copies of criminal records for general and judicial use, in accordance with the decrees of articles 576 and 577 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as supplanted with articles 9 and 10 of Law 1805/1988 (Official Government Gazette 199/A).

The Independent Criminal Records Department of the Central Services of the Ministry of Justice issues copies of criminal records for individuals who have been born abroad or do not have a place of residence or are officially missing.

Criminal Records Services of the Public Prosecutors Office of Greece issue copies of criminal records for individuals who have been born in Greece, with the criteria being their place of birth.

Copies of criminal records are issued after the citizen submits an application to the appropriate Criminal Records Services, in the Services for the Citizen Centres or by phone by calling the number 1502. Applications in question are submitted in special forms, in which useful administrative information has been included to aid in filling them out, as well as the basic legal rules that govern the operation of the criminal records institution.

The Ministry of Justice intends to continually raise the quality of relevant services that are offered to citizens. For this reason it has suggested that in the operational action plan, that has been designed within the application framework of the Information Society Programme, the development of Integrated Information Systems in the Central Services sector be included, as well as in the District Criminal Records Services of the Prosecutors Office in Greece, with the aim of developing electric filing of criminal records that will produce an automatic edition of the applicant's certified criminal record.
