Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights

Charalampos Kastanidis

CURRICULUM VITAE
Born in Thessaloniki in 1956.

His father was Georgios Kastanidis, member of the Parliament with the Center Union (Enosi Kentrou) in Kozani before the dictatorship. Georgios Kastanidis passed away early, suffering from his impaired health following consecutive pursuits, exile and two court-martials during the military dictatorship.

His mother is the teacher Eleni Xifilidou.

He studied at the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He has completed his postgraduate studies on Criminal Law.

He is married to the professor of criminal law at the Faculty of Law of Thessaloniki, Elisavet Symeonidou and they have two daughters.

He is a member of PASOK since October 1974.

He was one of the leading officials of the student movement during the period of the political transition’s explosion and the lustration procedure from the junta. Head of the movement in the Faculty of Law of Thessaloniki, from the ranks of the student party of PASOK.

Responsible for the issues of ideology and enlightenment at the Prefectural Committee of the city of Thessaloniki, prior to his election as a member of the Parliament in 1981.

He is elected member of the Parliament of the first (A/) district of Thessaloniki constantly since 1981, when he was elected for the first time at the age of 25.

Member of the Central Committee since 1984.

He served as Assistant Minister of Internal Affairs during the period 1985 - 1986 at the age of 29.

Assistant Minister of Education for a short period in 1988.

He participated in the last Government of Andreas Papandreou as a deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Public Administration and Decentralization.

Following the election of Kostas Simitis as prime minister, he assumed the duties of Minister of Transportations and Communications on the 22/1/1996 until 2/9/1997, when he offered his resignation.

Since October 2001 and until the 4th of July 2003 he served as the Parliamentary Spokesman of PASOK.

From 7/7/2003 to 7/3/2004 he served as Minister of Macedonia and Thrace.

From March of 2004 until March 2008 he served as the Parliamentary Spokesman of PASOK.

From April 2008 he served as Political Spokesman of PASOK on Internal Affairs issues and Co-ordinator of Political Spokesmen of the Movement.

Since October 7th 2009 he is the Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights.
